Look, such a sight, so beautiful, So filled with grace, It's her, this girl who comes and who passes, With a sweet swing, on her way to the sea. Girl with body of gold From the sun of Ipanema, Her swing Is more than a poem, Is a sight more beautiful Than I have ever seen pass by. Ah, why am I so alone? Why is there so much sadness? This beauty that exists, This beauty that is not only mine, That also passes by alone. Ah, if she but knew, That when she passes by, The world smiles, Is filled with grace, And becomes more beautiful, Because of love. (lyrics by Tom Jobim)

If you tell me that I'm out of tune, darling You should know that it causes me great pain Only privileged people have hearing like yours And I have only the one God gave me If you insist on labeling My performance as unmusical Even if I lied I should argue that: This is Bossa Nova, This is very natural What you don't know, nor can you foresee Is that those who sing out of tune do also have a heart I photographed you with my Rolleiflex It exposed your great ingratitude You just can’t talk this way about my love It is the greatest that you can find You, with you music, forgot the essential: In the chest of those who sing out of tune Deep inside, it softly beats In the chest of those who sing out of tune A heart is beating as well.

Quero a vida sempre assim Com você perto de mim Até o apagar da velha chama E eu que era triste Descrente desse mundo Ao encontrar você eu conheci O que é felicidade, meu amor Quiet nights of quiet stars Quiet chords from my guitar Floating on the silence that surrounds us Quiet thoughts and quiet dreams Quiet walks by quiet streams And a window that looks out on Corcovado Oh, how lovely This is where I want to be Here with you so close to me Until the final flicker of life's ember I who was lost and lonely Believing life was only A bitter tragic joke, have found with you The meaning of existence, oh my love

about

Made with much love for my Dad (Happy Christmas!) who turned me on to the gorgeous music of Antonio 'Tom' Jobim and singer/guitarist João Gilberto as a kid.
Bossa Nova ('new wave') is a Brazilian* fusion of samba rhythms, jazz harmony and Fado, a Portuguese style of folksong; best played with a unique swing and light touch.
I hope these recordings lead you back to 2 inspirational Verve LPs, specifically; 'Getz/Gilberto' (which the famous 'Girl from Ipanema' single comes from) and the sublime 'Voz e Violão' (made by João nearly 40 years later).

Special thanks to my guitar guru 'Reverend' Joel Morrison and special guest David Moyer (doing his best homage to Stan Getz).

[*My apologies to any Brazilian listeners for any mispronunciation of the Portuguese lyrics! ]
