This is a collection of songs originally recorded by 'Mississippi' John Hurt in 1928 for the Okeh label, recorded in my back yard with a restored 1930's Regal 'parlor' style steel string guitar (a birthday gift from my family; cheers guys!)
I've been learning guitar for a just over a year now and was looking for a new challenge, playing-wise. At the same time, my teacher Joel Morrison was steering me back to the roots of American music and the pioneers of blues - and country blues - guitar. John Hurt's music was something of a revelation; witty, soft-spoken, conversational vocals over a deceptively sparse fingerpicking style that owes more to syncopated ragtime piano-playing than my pre-conceived notions about 'blues guitar'. It's been a real treat both discovering this music and trying to get my head, heart and fingers around it; I hope y'all enjoy the recordings and feel inspired to go look him up for yourselves!
Special Thanks to: Fi and Dad; Joel M (and all the McCabe's staff); 'Bone', Tim W and Uncle Rob (for all the encouragement.)
